Tire driver investigated after being discovered with 23 migrants hidden in the means of transport and five tons of smuggled tobacco

A Turkish citizen, driving a truck registered in Romania, showed up for the border formalities, on the way out of the country. According to the documents accompanying the goods, he was transporting various goods to a Belgian company.

Following a thorough check on the means of transport, the border guards discovered, hidden in the cargo compartment, twenty-three foreign nationals.

At the same time, during the verification of the semi-trailer, among the transported goods, several cardboard boxes were discovered containing the quantity of 5,751.5 kg of hookah tobacco, for which the driver could not present accompanying documents.

The hidden detainees were taken and transported to the headquarters of the sector for investigation where, following the verifications, the border police established that the persons in question are citizens of Turkey, Syria, Iraq and Pakistan, aged between 18 and 42 years and intended fraudulently arrive in a Schengen area.

The entire amount of tobacco, estimated at 5.7 million lei, was seized in order to continue the investigation, and in this case the border police are conducting investigations under the aspect of committing crimes of attempted fraudulent crossing of the state border for foreign citizens and trafficking migrants and smuggling for the driver of the means of transport, at the end of which the necessary legal measures will be ordered.
