Lithuanian Border Guards detain three colleagues suspected of organising drug smuggling

During the pre-trial investigation, the border guards of the SBGS Immunity Board detained three officials suspected of organizing smuggling and abuse of office. Another Druskininkai resident was also detained.

Last year, the border guards of the SBGS Immunity Board launched a pre-trial investigation into smuggling from Belarus. During the proceedings, they detained three officers of the Varėna border team (one born in 1974, two in 1977) in Druskininkai and Lazdijai on Tuesday.

They are suspected of organizing smuggling and abusing the service. All three detainees were detained on Tuesday.

The border guards of the anti-corruption unit of the SBGS, ie the Immunity Board, also detained a local resident in Druskininkai on the same day (born in 1956). He is suspected of complicity in smuggling. The man was also detained in custody.

The SBGS has also initiated an official inspection. In addition to criminal liability, detained officials face the most severe penalty provided for in the Internal Staff Statute: dismissal for demotion of an official.

The ongoing investigation is controlled by the Prosecutor of the Organized Crime and Corruption Investigation Division of the Vilnius Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
