Polish Border Guards in Kalisz detained a Ukrainian man transporting 15 illegal migrants

On December 2nd, officers stopped a Renault passenger van driven by a 49-year-old Ukrainian for a roadside check. The vehicle, which was heading towards Germany on the A2 motorway, also contained 15 foreigners (12 Somalis and 3 Ethiopians) illegally residing in Poland. A check of the foreigners’ legality revealed that the group had escaped from a Latvian refugee center and entered Poland through Lithuania. The foreigners claimed that once inside Poland, they boarded a car driven by a Ukrainian, who was supposed to take them to the Polish-German border. All were detained.

A 49-year-old from Ukraine was charged with facilitating the illegal stay in Poland of 15 foreigners. He pleaded guilty and voluntarily accepted a fine of PLN 3,000. He was also issued an indefinite return detention order and a 10-year ban on re-entry to the Schengen Area. As a result, he was escorted to the Polish-Ukrainian border crossing and handed over to the local authorities.

Meanwhile, 15 foreigners were handed over to the Lithuanian side as part of readmission.
