Romanian citizen under house arrest for migrant smuggling 

Border police officers from the Giurgiu Border Police together and their Bulgarian counterparts, stopped a car registered in Romania for inspection on DN 5. It was driven by a Romanian citizen and was accompanied by four passengers, foreign citizens, traveling on the Bulgaria-Romania route.

Following the checks carried out on the means of transport, our colleagues discovered that the passengers, foreign citizens, did not have valid travel documents nor did they meet the legal conditions for entry into Romania, declaring that they were Iraqi citizens.

In this case, investigations are being carried out for the commission of the crimes of migrant smuggling (art. 263), fraudulent crossing of the state border (art. 262), acts provided for and punished by the Criminal Code, and upon completion of the investigations, legal solutions will be proposed by the prosecutor’s office. In accordance with the provisions of the cooperation plan concluded between the Romanian Border Police and the Bulgarian Border Police, on April 29 this year, a border meeting took place, during which the four passengers were handed over to the competent authorities in Bulgaria, for further investigations.
