Tens of thousands of smuggled cigarettes discovered on roads near the border with Bulgaria

Following the inspection of a truck, a joint inspection team discovered several packs of cigarettes hidden and undeclared in specially arranged places in the floor of the vehicle, as well as in the upholstery of the sides.

During their inventory, a total quantity of 109,920 cigarettes (5,496 packs of cigarettes) of various brands was found, which did not have a tax stamp applied and for which the driver did not have any documents of origin.

A few hours later, border police officers from the Giurgiu Border Police Sector stopped a car registered in Bulgaria, driven by a 39-year-old Bulgarian citizen, for inspection. Following the inspection of the vehicle, our colleagues discovered several packs of cigarettes hidden among the luggage.

During their inventory, a total quantity of 11,400 cigarettes (570 packs of cigarettes) of various brands was found, which had Bulgarian tax stamps and for which the driver did not have any documents of origin.

The entire quantity of cigarettes (6,066 packs of cigarettes), estimated at a value of approximately 177,000 lei , was confiscated by the border police, and the modified van with specially arranged seats, worth 75,000 lei , was seized and placed in the Border Police’s crime scene.
