The Bulgarian Ministry of the Interior and the Prosecutor’s Office created an interdepartmental unit to counter the distribution of drugs, human trafficking and illegal migration

The Acting Chief Prosecutor of the Republic of Bulgaria Borislav Sarafov and the Minister of Internal Affairs Kalin Stoyanov signed an order for the creation of a specialized interdepartmental unit. Its purpose is to support the investigation of pre-trial proceedings, the formation of files, the collection and analysis of information on organized criminal groups and individuals related to the production, possession and distribution of narcotic substances, human trafficking and illegal migration.

The specialized unit includes prosecutors from the Supreme Cassation Prosecutor’s Office, senior officials from the Directorate General “National Police” and the Directorate General “Combating Organized Crime”. They will monitor operational cases, files and pre-trial proceedings with the aim of their timely completion.
In order to prevent the spread of drugs, with the assistance of the Ministry of Education and Science, explanatory discussions, meetings and trainings will be organized with students, teachers, parents and representatives of security companies responsible for security in educational institutions, about the harmful consequences of the use of narcotic substances and trends in their distribution. The participants in the educational sessions will also be informed about the criminal liability and sanctions, according to the current legislation.

The interdepartmental unit will submit a monthly report to the Prosecutor General and the Minister of Internal Affairs on the work done, with the aim being to evaluate the available data, monitor and improve the efficiency of the work of the Prosecutor’s Office and the Ministry of Internal Affairs. The results of the activity of the unit for combating organized criminal groups and persons involved in the distribution of narcotic substances, human trafficking and illegal migration will be regularly presented to the public.

The management control and coordination of the joint unit is assigned to the deputy chief prosecutor at the CPSU and the chief secretary of the Ministry of Internal Affairs.
