Two men arrested after trying to smuggle five migrants into Romania hidden in a minibus

Border police stopped a Czech-registered minibus for checks in Giurgiu County. The vehicle was driven by a Moldovan citizen and had a Bulgarian citizen as a passenger.

Following the inspection, a special hiding place was discovered in the cargo compartment, where five people were hidden – four Syrian citizens and one Iraqi citizen. The checks carried out revealed that the migrants were boarded near the city of Sofia, Bulgaria, and transported approximately five hours to the border with Romania.

The five foreign citizens were handed over to the Bulgarian border authorities for further investigation and application of legal measures.

The two men – the driver and the passenger – were arrested for 30 days and are being investigated for the crime of migrant smuggling.
