26 migrants discovered by Romanian border police
On January 10, 2026, at approximately 03:50 AM, border police officers from the Giurgiu Border Police Territorial Inspectorate, in collaboration with their Bulgarian counterparts, conducted a control operation in the parking lot near the Calafat-Vidin toll station. They selected a vehicle registered in Turkey, driven by a Turkish citizen on a route from Turkey to Romania and Germany.
The vehicle was reportedly transporting grills and electric hobs. However, during a thorough inspection, officers discovered several individuals of Afro-Asian origin hidden inside the semi-trailer. The group consisted of 18 Syrian citizens, 3 Iranians, 1 Iraqi, 3 Moroccans, and 1 Egyptian, all attempting to enter Romania illegally.
Following established protocols, a border meeting was held, and the Turkish driver along with the group of 26 individuals and the vehicle were handed over to the Bulgarian authorities for further investigation.
