Cigarettes worth over 460,000 lei, seized for confiscation by Maramures border police
Romanian border guards noticed, on the bed of the Laura River, several people carrying several bulky packages from the state border to the interior of the country.
Immediately, they acted to apprehend those involved, but when the men noticed the border police crew, abandoned their packages and fled to the territory of the neighboring state. Ukrainian border authorities were been notified of the incident.
Subsequently, 30 packages of cigarettes of Ukrainian origin were discovered on the spot, which was transported to the headquarters of the sector. The inventory resulted in a quantity of 15,000 packs of cigarettes, of Ukrainian origin.
The entire quantity of cigarettes, amounting to 175,500 lei, was seized for confiscation.
On Thursday, December 16 this year, the border guards from the Sarasău Border Police Sector also organized and carried out an action to combat cigarette smuggling in the area of responsibility. The border policemen noticed, in the direction of Tecido Mic locality, several people moving from the Tisza river to the interior of the country, transporting large parcels. As they did not obey, the border guards fired a vertical warning shot.
However, the people abandoned the packages and fled to the neighboring state. The Ukrainian border authorities were immediately notified of the incident for a joint investigation into the case. The packages were transported to the headquarters of the sector, and following the inventory, it was found that they contained the quantity of 10,250 packs of cigarettes from duty-free shops, worth 119,925 lei.
A similar action was carried out, also in the area of competence of SPF Sarasău, but within the locality of Săpânţa. Border guards noticed several people crossing the Tisza River in our country, carrying large packages behind them. This time too, the people were ordered to stop, but did not obey, abandoned their packages, and returned to the territory of the Ukrainian state. In the immediate vicinity, the border police discovered a car, registered in Romania and 18 bulky packages.
The car and the packages were transported to the headquarters of the sector, and the inventory resulted in the quantity of 14,290 packs of cigarettes from duty-free shops, worth 167,193 lei. The cigarettes were seized for confiscation, and the car, worth about 10,000 lei, was made unavailable at the institution’s headquarters until the end of the investigation.
In both cases, investigations are being carried out under the aspect of committing the crime of smuggling and illegal crossing of the state border, and further checks are being carried out to detect all those involved, under the guidance of the case prosecutor from the Prosecutor’s Office, attached to the Sighetu Marmatiei Court. in the end, the necessary legal measures should be taken.
