Almost 14 tons of contraband tobacco, worth over 1.5 million lei, discovered in a truck

Romanian border police discovered, following a check carried out on a truck, the amount of 13,860 kg of shredded tobacco, for which the driver did not have provenance documents.

The entire amount of tobacco, estimated at a value of 1,524,000 lei, was confiscated by the police in order to continue the investigations and the driver of the means of transport is being investigated for the crime of smuggling.

On 16.10.2022, around 12.30, at the Bechet Border Crossing Point, a 40-year-old Bulgarian citizen presented himself to enter the country, driving a truck. According to the documents presented, it was transporting, on the Greece-Slovakia route, raw, unprocessed tobacco.

Following the thorough control carried out on the vehicle, in the cargo cabin, 99 boxes, each with a net quantity of 140 kilograms, containing crushed tobacco, contrary to what was written in the documents presented to the control, respectively raw tobacco – unprocessed.

The Bulgarian driver is being investigated.
