Polish Border Guards and CBŚP officers find 400,000 packets of cigarettes, with an estimated value of nearly PLN 6 million

The illegal goods entered Poland from Lithuania in a truck trailer.

Officers of the Podlasie Border Guard Unit, as part of joint actions with policemen from the Management Board in Białystok of the Central Police Investigation Bureau (CBŚP) on the national road number 8 in the Raczki commune (Suwałki poviat) selected a truck for inspection on Lithuanian registration numbers.

When checking the truck, it turned out that in the trailer, instead of the declared thermal insulation materials, there are huge amounts of cigarettes without Polish excise stamps. Contraband was transported by a 28-year-old Lithuanian citizen.

In total, in the vehicle, officers revealed 400 thousand. packs of Belarusian cigarettes with an estimated value of nearly PLN 6 million (which exposed the Treasury to a loss of over PLN 9.7 million) .

Preliminary proceedings were initiated against the driver, under the supervision of the District Prosecutor’s Office in Suwałki, by officers of the Podlasie Border Guard Unit. Cigarettes, a truck tractor and a semi-trailer were secured for the case. The detained man was charged with criminal and fiscal charges and temporarily arrested – for three months. He may be imprisoned for up to 10 years.
