
Turkish driver, pre-trial arrested after transporting 15 foreign citizens hidden in a truck
Romanian Border police officers from the Giurgiu Border Police Sector, in cooperation with their Bulgarian counterparts, stopped for control, on DN5, as part of a BLITZ-type action, a truck registered in Turkey, driven by a 46-year-old Turkish citizen, traveling on the Turkey – Belgium route.
During a thorough inspection of the truck, border police discovered 15 foreign citizens hidden inside it, with checks establishing that they came from Iran and Iraq.
In this case, investigations are being carried out for the commission of the crimes of migrant smuggling and fraudulent crossing of the state border, acts provided for and punished by the Criminal Code, and upon completion of the investigations, legal solutions will be proposed through the prosecutor’s office.
On the same day, criminal investigation officers from the Giurgiu Border Police Sector and the Giurgiu Border Police Territorial Service ordered the detention of the Turkish driver for 24 hours, placing him in the Detention and Preventive Arrest Center within the Giurgiu IPJ.
Shortly after, the 15 citizens from Iran and Iraq were taken over by the Bulgarian authorities, in order to continue the investigation and take the necessary legal measures.
