Two foreign citizens, discovered hiding in a semi-trailer

Border police officers in Giurgiu have discovered two Moroccan nationals hidden inside a Turkish-registered freight vehicle attempting to enter Romania, authorities have reported.

The incident occurred during a routine inspection on DN5, where border police stopped a tractor-trailer combination driven by a Turkish citizen. The vehicle was transporting aluminium profiles on a route from Turkey to Romania.

During a search of the semi-trailer, officers found two foreign nationals concealed among the cargo. The individuals were unable to present any travel documents and were discovered unconscious inside the trailer.

Investigators determined that the pair had gained access to the vehicle by cutting through the trailer’s tarpaulin. Authorities noted that the customs seal on the truck remained intact, indicating that the migrants entered without the driver’s knowledge.

Given the condition of the two men, border police immediately requested emergency medical assistance through Romania’s 112 emergency service. After receiving treatment and being stabilised by medical personnel, the migrants were transported from Giurgiu County Emergency Hospital to the headquarters of the Giurgiu Border Police Sector for further questioning.

Subsequent checks established that both individuals were Moroccan citizens. Romanian authorities opened a criminal investigation for the offence of illegally crossing the state border, in accordance with Article 262(1) of the Criminal Code.

Following the completion of initial procedures, the two migrants were handed over to the Bulgarian authorities, who will continue the investigation and take the appropriate legal measures.

The Giurgiu Territorial Border Police Inspectorate said the case highlights the continued challenges posed by irregular migration routes through the region and the dangers faced by migrants attempting to cross borders hidden in freight vehicles.
